Philippa Pearce Memorial Lecture
Seven Stories is proud to host the 2010 Philippa Pearce Memorial Lecture. The guest speaker this year is former children’s laureate and best selling author, Michael Morpurgo. This is an exclusive opportunity to hear Michael Morpurgo speak about the exceptional legacy of British Children’s Books in memory of our friend and supporter Phillipa Pearce, who made an outstanding contribution to the UK’s literary heritage.
Philippa Pearce is the influential author of the classic children’s book Tom’s Midnight Garden as well as many other titles including The Battle of Bubble and Squeak (1978), The Squirrel Wife (1971) and A Dog So Small (1962). She was raised on the idyllic banks of the River Cam and, despite a late start into mainstream education, Philippa went onto study English at Girton College, Cambridge. Before writing her own books Philippa began a career as a script writer and producer for the BBC.
Philippa drew on her own experiences as a child, and later, that of her own children for her writing. The house where Tom stays with his Aunt, in Tom’s Midnight Garden, was heavily influenced by the mill where Philippa grew up. Other titles, including The Battle of Bubble and Squeak, were written for her daughter, and avid animal lover.
