ABOUT the book:

Tess has always lived in the turns, a network of tunnels under the River Tees. But her Aunt Peg is getting mind-swirly and can no longer protect Tess from her monstrous Unkle Darkwater. Tess knows she must leave the river — but dry-folk have always been suspicious of the likes of her. Will she ever find a place to belong?
Riverskin is a middle grade novel heavily inspired by Peg Powler, a character from Teesside folklore: a green-skinned witch who is said to haunt the River Tees, snatching people from the bankside and dragging them to their doom. The book began with a series of what ifs: What if Peg wasn’t as bad as she’d been made out? What if Peg got ill? What if Peg wasn’t attacking people but something else was? What if Peg had family? What if she had a daughter?

ABOUT the author:

Mike is a Teesside-based writer and spoken word performer who has performed at festivals and events across the UK, including as a poetry coach on Apples and Snakes’ national slam poetry project Shake the Dust, and BBC Radio 3’s spoken word show The Verb. He has a master’s in creative writing from Northumbria University and is a recipient of a New Writing North Northern Promise Award.
