Seven Stories & Fenwick Team Up to Bring the Magic of Narnia to Life

To honour this year’s Fenwick Christmas window, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe, pupils from seven schools across the region were invited to Seven Stories, the National Centre for Children’s Books for a surprise day out.

“Our children have shown great enthusiasm and love for the performance, books and creative activities today; they’re definitely all in the Christmas spirit now. We are in absolute awe of what Seven Stories provides for both children and adults, thank you.” – Tahli Rollitt, teacher at Morpeth Road Academy

On Wednesday 22nd November, Year 6 pupils from each school attended the special day where they enjoyed an interactive re-imagining of the classic C.S. Lewis text as part of the festivities.

Pupils were invited from seven North East schools, from Blyth to Peterlee and North Shields to Middlesbrough, to celebrate the magic of Narnia through a bespoke performance from Seven Stories creative storytelling team. Children were welcomed with hot chocolate in the bookshop before watching the show, and enjoyed exploring the Seven Stories galleries ahead of creating their own winter wonderland in a craft session.

Each pupil received a festive treat and a copy of the Fenwick Special Edition of The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe to take home with them.

Fenwick’s Christmas Window was revealed on Sunday 5th November and features illustrated scenes from C.S. Lewis’ The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe, published by HarperCollins Children’s Books.

After the performance, Karl from Carr Hill Primary School in Gateshead was crowned the winner of Seven Stories Winter Writing Competition for their story titled ‘A Soldier Coming Home for Christmas’. The storytelling exercise was circulated to attending schools in advance of Wednesday’s visit and was sponsored by Fenwick.

Wendy Elliott, CEO of Seven Stories, said ‘Karl’s story was heart-warming and wonderful to finish, it flowed very well and it built suspense brilliantly. We are delighted to be able to recognise talent in this way and provide a truly magical day for the pupils and teachers in attendance.

Wendy continued, ‘As an educational charity that works to support reading for pleasure, it is so important for us to be able to give children the opportunity to have a special day out that they will hopefully remember for a long time. This day was all about working with schools who may not have visited us before, so that pupils and teachers alike can experience the magic of bringing stories to life. In this way, The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe was the perfect festive story to reimagine, celebrate and share.”

64 children attended the event from primary schools across the region including Thorntree Academy, Ridgeway Primary School, West Walker Primary School, Carr Hill Primary School, Percy Main Primary School, Seascape Primary School and Morpeth Road Academy.
