Shakespeare Summer Club

“This week, my daughter is at a summer school, all based around Shakespeare and literature. Why? Because she is a book worm, loves writing short stories and this is right up her street. I have watched her self-esteem sky rocket week, her confidence has grown, all because she is happy! Her happiness shows the true success of the brilliant team at Seven Stories, The National Centre for Children’s Books. Can’t wait for show day tomorrow!”

The ultimate summer adventure.

Between July and September 2023, Seven Stories hosted the opportunity for young storytellers to build confidence, make friends and work collaboratively to unlock the wonders of the Bard himself, William Shakespeare.

Our Summer Club was open to every kind of book lover and budding performer, all that was required to participate was a positive can-do attitude, a sprinkle of curiosity and a dash of creativity!

Sharing unique tips and tricks from her time at Shakespeare’s Globe, professional actor and Seven Stories Creative Associate, Jaqueline Phillips lead our company of storytellers through a unique journey, unlocking the imagination and fostering team-work as each group created their own interpretation of the delightfully silly comedy A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

Here at Seven Stories, we firmly believe there’s a story in every child, and wanted to give youngsters an opportunity to harness their creativity in a safe and supportive environment. Be it set-design, script-writing and editing, staging, production, costume-creation, performing, singing or dancing, each child was given the freedom to explore multiple creative outlets while working alongside our Seven Stories Story Catchers.

With the kindness and support of donors, we were able to fund a portion of community places on our Summer Club. This meant a little under 50% of those who joined us each week, were able to enjoy five days of educational, collaborative and creative fun, without having to worry about preventative barriers.

And the culmination of each youngsters hard work? Each week’s group concluded with a marvellous performance where our aspiring storytellers presented their own rendition of A Midsummer Night’s Dream to an intimate audience of family and friends in our Seven Stories Attic. Each performance saw cries of laughter, standing ovations and selfies with the characters; we’re in awe of every talented storyteller who was in attendance.
